If bowel cancer is diagnosed, our specialists are experts in assessment and management of bowel cancers and actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to ensure the patient has access to the best network of specialists and treatment options.

A bowel resection involves removal of section of the bowel which can involve the small bowel, colon or rectum. This may be required for benign conditions such as diverticular disease and malignant conditions such as colorectal cancer. Minimally invasive approaches via laparoscopic and robotic techniques are offered to appropriate patients.

Imaging of the small bowel is conventionally achieved by using a capsule endoscope. A disposable, single use camera the size of a paracetamol capsule is swallowed by the patient and continuous video images are recorded over the course of a single day by transmission to a wireless belt recorder.

A colonoscopy is an optical examination of the lower gastrointestinal tract using a video camera known as a colonoscope. During this procedure the large bowel, or colon, and the end of the small bowel tract, or terminal ileum, can be inspected. Colonoscopy is an important bowel cancer screening and diagnostic tool.

A gastroscopy is an optical examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract using a video camera known as a gastroscope. Gastroscopy is also known endoscopy, panendoscopy or oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. Gastroscopy is offered when patients have upper gastrointestinal symptoms, unexplained iron deficiency or anaemia.
