FAQ
What can I expect at my initial consultation?
During your first visit your gastroenterologist or surgeon will evaluate your symptoms and any investigations you have already had. As part of the initial consultation your specialist may request additional tests or procedures such as blood tests, imaging studies, or endoscopic examinations for diagnosis or treatment. If surgery is required, your surgeon will discuss details of the operation with you. A treatment plan and follow-up recommendations may also be prescribed.
What do I need to prepare for or bring on my first visit?
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment to allow time to complete a registration form on your first visit. It is also important that you bring the following:
- Medicare card, health fund card, referral letter
- List of your current medical conditions and current medications
- Recent blood test results and imaging test results (including X-rays, ultrasounds, CTs, MRIs, nuclear medicine scans etc)
- Copies of hospital discharge letters and past medical records

Can I have a procedure without having to come in for an appointment first? (open access endoscopy) ?
Having a procedure without prior medical review is only appropriate for some patients. This can be suitable if you are fit and healthy, have no major medical problems and take no medications. Other times, this is not a good idea (if you have complicated medical problems or take blood thinning medications). Your GP will almost certainly have made a determination about this and given us a good indication on your referral about which would be suitable for you.
If you request direct or open access endoscopy, we will look at your GP referral and get back to you soon about whether we think this is appropriate in your circumstances.
Is this a bulk billing practice?
This is a private billing practice.
For endoscopy procedures in private hospitals, our specialists have a ‘known-gap’ policy for patients with adequate health fund coverage.
For surgical procedures the operating surgeon will discuss financial disclosure and consent with you before booking your operation.
